The CDC reports that young people living with HIV are the least likely of any age group to be retained in care and have a suppressed viral load. Advocates for Youth recognizes that addressing HIV in youth requires that young people have access to honest and inclusive information and tools they need to make informed decisions.

As a caring adult, you can influence healthy behaviors in youth by simply talking to them. Discussing relationships, consent, safe dating and other topics related to sexual wellness helps to form the skills youth need to express boundaries.

Having these genuine conversations can help inform youth about safer-sex practices to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections and diseases, such as HIV. Genuine conversations also destigmatize topics, such as HIV testing or health care plans.

Taking the time to have these conversations not only builds healthy behaviors, but can also prevent potentially dangerous situations. However, starting these conversations can feel challenging. That's understandable!

Talking is Power! is a text line for caring adults - text EMPOWER to 97779 to receive text messages on how to talk about sexual health topics with youth and young adults.

Did you know?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can result in permanent liver damage, liver cancer, liver failure or even death.

Hepatitis C can be spread through a few different ways: contact with infected blood, through bodily fluids during vaginal/anal/oral sex, and it can even pass from mom to baby during the birthing process if the mother is infected.
Luckily, the symptoms can be treated. The only way to find out if you have hepatitis is through a blood test or physical exam.

It has been four decades since HIV/AIDS has been reported in the U.S. Since that initial report, we have learned so much about prevention and treatment.

Individuals can now make informed lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of transmission. This includes the decision to take daily medication to reduce the chances of contracting HIV.

If an individual receives a positive result for HIV, it is possible to live well with health care support and treatment. Following a medication regimen not only helps individuals living with HIV stay healthy, but it also prevents the transmission of the virus to others.

Early detection has a substantially positive impact on health outcomes. Make HIV testing a regular part of your health care routine. Now you can do so regardless of immediate access to a health care facility.

Today is National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
HIV has a disproportionate impact on Alaska Native and American Indian populations. Four out of five Native people knew they had HIV. This means 20% of Native people with HIV did not know they had the virus.
Often times people don't know their status because they are unaware of their sexual partner(s) risk factors, which includes injection drug use and risky sex practices. Knowing your HIV status is important for developing a plan to protect yourself and your sexual partner(s).

Ways to prevent HIV transmission include the use of clean injection equipment and safe-sex practices, such as regular condom use.
