Many people don’t realize that lube can make sex safer *and* increase comfort and pleasure at the same time. Here are our top three lube tips and tricks:

πŸ˜„πŸ’¦ Lube just feels better!! Lube allows for a more pleasurable experience during vaginal and anal sex and masturbation (solo and mutual).

πŸ˜– Friction that happens during sex or masturbation without lubrication can lead to irritation, pain and small tears of vaginal, anal and rectal tissues. Using lube can reduce this risk, which also reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV.

πŸ‘‰ Always use lube that is safe and made specifically for sex. Avoid using lotions, baby oil or petroleum jelly as sexual lubricants - these can irritate genitals and break condoms.

When using condoms, always make sure your lube is condom-safe. This means using water-based or silicone lube with latex condoms β€” lube with oil in it can break down latex and cause condoms to tear. Sexual lubricants purchased in the condom aisle are usually safe to use with condoms.

The term "Two-Spirit" is an identifier specific to Native individuals and its meaning varies from person to person.

The use of "Two-Spirit" to describe Indigenous gender identity is highly personal and depends on cultural contexts. Two-Spirit people generally embody a combination of masculine and feminine gender expressions and roles. Two-Spirit people have long held respected social status and sacred ceremonial roles.

Many Native languages have specific terms to describe gender. As with any gender identity, ask individuals for their identifying terms. Some people choose not to use the term Two-Spirit, and instead choose a term specific to their culture.

Today, many people are reclaiming Two-Spirit roles and developing their own definitions of what it means to be Two-Spirit. To learn about Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ activism, art, pride and celebration, visit @2slgbtq or https://www.pathsremembered.org/our-stories/ (link in bio)

Gender affirmation saves lives!

Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging. Affirmation from adults and peers nurtures the will to live. Gender-affirming guardians and relatives provide the strongest feelings of love and support, which significantly lowers the rates of attempted suicide among transgender and nonbinary youth.

You are loved and safe in this space.

Safe, inclusive and welcoming spaces are critically important to provide holistic wellness for 2SLGBTQ (Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning) community members.

A safe space is a place, program or community that is intentionally working to affirm 2SLGBTQ identities. Creating welcoming spaces is a continual process; one that requires accountability and buy-in from everyone who create the space and access it.

The iKnowMine team commits to providing a safe space for Alaskans. Please feel welcome to slide into our DMs with feedback on accountability and how to improve our efforts.

Masturbation can be an effective form of self-care.

Masturbation can provide a way to better understand your own body and sexuality, while increasing hormone levels associated with a positive mood, such as dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin.

However, be mindful of safe and hygienic masturbation practices.
The number one tip: 🧼 wash your hands (and toys)!
Always wash your hands and toys before and after masturbation to prevent bacterial infections.

πŸ™Œ Take care of your hands.
Practicing hand hygiene, such as keeping nails trimmed, can reduce the risk of abrasions, or tiny cuts.

πŸ’¦ Lubricants are helpful, but be mindful.
Some people are sensitive or allergic to certain types of lubricants. Water-based lubricant is the best option to start with.

What is PrEP?
- PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medicine to help keep you HIV negative
- Taken daily
- PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed

What is PEP?
- PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is an emergency-use medication that is prescribed after a possible HIV exposure, if you are not on PrEP or have missed taking PrEP as prescribed.
- PEP is most effective the sooner it is started, and must be started within 72 hours of HIV exposure.
- PEP is taken daily for 28 days.

What is U=U?
- β€˜Undetectable’ is when a person living with HIV takes medications to keep the virus at very low levels (called β€œundetectable viral load”).
- An undetectable viral load is when antiretroviral treatment (ART) has reduced an individual’s HIV levels to extremely small quantities to where it can no longer be detected by standard blood tests

The key to sexually transmitted infection or disease (STI) treatment is early intervention. Early intervention is most effective for treating STIs, preventing transmission and can minimize or prevent any long-lasting effects.

Typically, STIs are treated with either antibiotics or antivirals.

Antibiotics: In a single dose, antibiotics can cure many STIs including gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia and trichomoniasis. The most important part of taking antibiotics is to finish the prescription.

Antivirals: If you have herpes or HIV, you'll be prescribed an antiviral drug. You'll have fewer herpes recurrences if you take daily suppressive therapy with a prescription antiviral drug. But, it's still possible to give your partner herpes.

The sooner you start HIV treatment, the more effective it is. If you take your medications as directed, it's possible to reduce the viral load in the blood so that it can hardly be detected.

Ask which sexually transmitted infections and diseases (STIs) you are being tested for.

Not all STI tests are the same, and no STI test is comprehensive. There's not a single test that covers all STIs. In fact, each STI could have its own test type.

For example, if you test for chlamydia and gonorrhea, your syphilis status is unknown, unless you take a separate test for it. If you have a concern about a specific STI, bring that up with your health care provider to ensure they test for it.

Speak to a health care provider to find out which type of test(s) would be best for you. Testing can include:
- a urine test
- a cheek swab
- a blood test
- a physical exam
- testing your sores
- using a swab to gently take discharge or cell samples from your penis, vagina, urethra, cervix, anus or throat.

Keep in mind that you might have to take site-specific tests. For example, you might need genital, anal and oral testing. A negative test for a genital site does not necessarily mean you will test negative orally or anally.

To learn more about STI testing, visit https://www.iknowmine.org/topic/sti-testing/ (link in bio)

As a caring adult, you can influence healthy behaviors in youth by simply talking to them. Discussing relationships, consent, safe dating and other topics related to sexual wellness helps to form the skills youth need to express boundaries.

Having these genuine conversations can help inform youth about safer-sex practices to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections and diseases, such as HIV. Genuine conversations also destigmatize topics, such as HIV testing or health care plans.

Starting these conversations can feel challenging. That's understandable!

Talking is Power! is a text line for caring adults - text EMPOWER to 97779 to receive text messages on how to talk about sexual health topics with youth and young adults.
